City could recognize domestic partnerships

January 27th, 2012

Eden Prairie is set to create a domestic partnership registry.

The Eden Prairie City Council approved the first reading of the ordinance Tuesday. A second reading is expected at the Jan. 17 City Council meeting.

At an August work session, the Human Rights and Diversity Commission told the city that Minneapolis created a registry in 1991. Several other cities have since included a registry, like Duluth, Edina, Richfield and St. Louis Park.

City Manager Rick Getschow said Eden Prairie’s ordinance was modeled on one in Hopkins, where those registering must live in the city.

He said it would allow unmarried couples who live in Eden Prairie to document their relationship...

The Celebrity Entertainment Show

Most of the 150,000 or so people who will attend the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week are executives and other staffers from companies in the tech industry: hardware makers, service providers, and retailers. Several thousand other attendees are mediafolk like me: reporters, bloggers, and analysts.

And the third most-represented group? It may well be celebrities. Theyre one of the most surefire ways to attract attention to a booth or a party, and so the companies exhibiting at the show bring them to Vegas by the truckload.

Some of the well-known people in attendance actually are into tech stuff: LeVar Burton, who I once had a pleasant chat with at a Monster party,...

School sports cuts threaten the Olympic legacy, says Tessa Jowell

Off
January 26th, 2012

The 2012 London Olympics will go down in history as a giant missed opportunity for young Britons unless David Cameron orders an urgent rethink to revive and boost sport in schools, former Labour Olympics minister Tessa Jowell says.

The stark warning from Jowell, a member of the Olympics board and one of the leading champions of the Games, lays bare mounting concern at sports highest levels that the Olympics will be scarred by a failure to deliver on the promise of a permanent legacy.

Her comments, in an interview with the Observer, will embarrass Cameron ahead of a special Olympics cabinet meeting this week to fine-tune planning for the £9bn Games, which are now just some 200 days...

Secret Sessions of Congress

January 25th, 2012

Congress has the constitutional authority to conduct its business in secret and to close its proceedings to the public whenever it deems secrecy necessary.  A new report from the Congressional Research Service reviews the justification, history and frequency of secret sessions of Congress.

Since 1929, the Senate has held 56 secret sessions, generally for reasons of national security or for consideration of impeachment questions. On December 20, 2010, for example, the Senate met in closed session to discuss the New START Treaty with Russia, the CRS report said.  Since 1830, the House has met behind closed doors only four times: in 1979, 1980, 1983, and 2008.

The proceedings...

Paranormal Activity 4 is haunted by the sequel problem

Off
January 24th, 2012

It wont come as a surprise to you to hear that Paranormal Activity 4 will be released in October. Why should it? Every Halloween, like clockwork, a new Paranormal Activity movie comes along; made for pennies, but raking in millions. Sure, the film needs to be written, performed, edited and released at whipcracker pace – so far, neither a writer or director has even been hired – but it doesnt matter. Paranormal Activity 3 has made over $200m so far, so itd be silly not to keep churning them out until the wheels fall off.

The problem is, the wheels might fall off at any minute. The Paranormal Activity formula is now so slick that the films pretty much write themselves....
